You may have lost money in your investment portfolio,
due to mismanagement and not even know it.

How do you know if you've been defrauded?

Even in good times, the market can be unpredictable. Investments that once seemed like a great idea can wind up losing a lot of money when economic conditions change.

But, sometimes investors lose money for more nefarious reasons. Investment fraud is a real problem.

How do you know why your investment lost money? Was it just bad luck, or did you fall victim to a scam?

Trust your gut

Does your loss make sense given everything else going on with the market? It can be hard to tell, but you don't have to be a prize-winning economist to understand general trends. If things don't seem to add up, you might want to talk to a lawyer about looking into things further.

Additionally, think back to when you were first sold the investment. At the time, things probably seemed really great. But in retrospect, were any of the following warning signs present?

  • Did someone guarantee you would see a profit?
  • Were you promised a "limited time" opportunity?
  • Did someone give you a "secret tip?"
  • Were you promised paperwork that never materialized?
  • Was the salesperson pushy or aggressive?

If the answer is yes, don't be too hard on yourself. Fraud is never the victim's fault. You can't turn back time, but you can take action going forward.

Be open and honest with your lawyer

If you have a suspicion that you might have been the victim of investment fraud, it is always a good idea to meet with a lawyer. An experienced attorney can review your case and determine what your best options are.

However, this only works if you're open and honest with your attorney. Often, fraud victims feel embarrassed about what happened, and this makes them hold back vital information. Ultimately, this can prevent the lawyer from being able to hold the scammer responsible for their actions.

Always know that your lawyer is there to help you, not to judge you. Your lawyer won't try to make you feel embarrassed about what happened, nor will they blame you.

By coming forward, you're not just helping yourself. You're helping everyone else who may have fallen victim to someone else's dishonesty.
