Video game teaches investors to avoid potential fraud

Using video games as teaching is nothing new. As a matter of fact, they have been used for decades to teach kids about math, reading, science and other things. Video games can also be helpful for adult in maintaining hand-eye coordination. In a new collaboration between the FINRA Investor Education Foundation and Doorways to Dreams (D2D), a new interactive video game has been developed to teach investors about the perils of investing when dealing with con artists.

Essentially, the game helps investors learn about the psychological persuasion tactics employed by unscrupulous brokers. Entitled “Con ‘Em If You Can” takes investors into the fictional world of Shady Acres, where the main character, “Connor” helps them accumulate wealth and power through fraud tools, but the player’s ultimate goal is to take Connor down before the fraud fighting agency in Shady Acres finds him.

With the goal of outsmarting investment fraud criminals, the game’s designers hope to give investors a tool to recognize the psychological red flags that many unwitting investors miss. According to financial fraud research, more than $50 billion is lost to financial fraud each year. Additionally, more than 8 in 10 individuals over the age of 40 have been asked to participate in a potentially fraudulent financial endeavor.

Even though the video game is an ingenious idea to avoid fraud, it still happens. And when it does, it is helpful to have a diligent and resourceful attorney to represent your interests. If you have questions about investment fraud, an experienced lawyer can help.
